Draft FSSAI (Food Safety Auditing) Amendment Regulations, 2026 — Qualifications for Food Safety Auditors

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has published the draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Safety Auditing) Amendment Regulations, 2026 in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part III, Section 4, with the prior approval of the Central Government. The principal regulations were published vide notification number F. No. TPA/01/REG/FSSAI-2017 dated August 28, 2018. Objections or suggestions, if any, may be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, FSSAI, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi – 110002 or sent by email at regulation@fssai.gov.in. Objections or suggestions received within the specified period will be considered by FSSAI.

The following amendments are proposed to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Safety Auditing) Regulations, 2018. In Regulation 3, Sub-regulation (1), Clause (c), the following substitutions are made.

Sub-clause (i) is substituted with the following:

(i) Bachelor’s or Master’s or Doctorate degree from a recognized University or institution in any of the following disciplines, –

Food Technology; Food Science & Technology; Food Engineering; Food Process Engineering; Food Process Engineering and Management; Food Processing; Food Engineering and Technology; Food Processing and Preservation; Food Processing Technology; Food Technology and Management; Process and Food Engineering; Food Plant Operations Management; Food Safety and Quality Management; Food Safety & Quality Assurance; Food & Nutrition; Food Nutrition and Dietetic; Food Biotechnology; Biotechnology; Oil Technology; Edible Oil Technology; Dairy Technology; Fruit & Vegetable Technology; Agricultural Science; Agriculture; Agriculture Engineering; Veterinary Science; Fisheries; Horticulture; Horticultural Science; Chemistry; Bio-Chemistry; Microbiology; Industrial Microbiology; Toxicology; Public Health; Life Science; Medicine; Animal Science; Equivalent/recognized qualification of Food Safety Officer notified by the Food Authority, from time to time;”

Sub-clause (ii) is substituted with the following:

(ii) Successful completion of Accredited Lead Auditor course in Food Safety Management System (ISO 22000).”

Sub-clause (v) is substituted with the following:

(v) work experience of minimum two years in food sector/industry; and a minimum of ten audits carried out, including Internal/Third Party”
