Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (Department of Consumer Affairs) has notified the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Third Amendment Rules, 2026. The amendment modifies Rule 4 and Rule 27 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. Importers, companies, firms, and Authorised Economic Operators Tier-2 and Tier-3 certified operators are impacted.
In Rule 4, Explanation-2 is inserted permitting importers to make mandatory declarations at bonded warehouses of AEO Tier-2 and Tier-3 certified operators, subject to the condition that all mandatory declarations under the rules are completed before retail packages leave such bonded warehouses.
In Rule 27, three insertions are made: clause (d) is added to sub-rule (2) requiring disclosure of the name of the Director of the company responsible for violations; a proviso is added to sub-rule (3) requiring annual online updation of company or firm details including address, products, and country of origin; and sub-rule (5) is inserted stating that registration certificates shall remain valid until cancelled.
